2022 Dear Chocolatier Letter

Hello, dear author or artist! I'm Anabel. I'm so psyched that we share one of these fandoms, and I'm so excited to see what you create! :) I’ve selected an eclectic and wide-ranging bunch of fandoms, so I’m looking forward to the surprise!

What I most love to see in fic and art is people who are happy, or in the process of becoming happy. This could mean having adventures, or falling in love, or being fulfilled in their career, or snuggling in bed with their partner, or fighting supervillains. Or perhaps all of these things in the same fanwork! This doesn’t necessarily mean unrelieved fluff – I’m a big fan of plot, smut, and adventures as well – but a focus on a character’s melancholy inner doubts (for instance), or on infidelity and betrayal and pain, wouldn’t appeal to me. I am absolutely addicted to happy endings. (Or "happy for now," in canons where outright happy endings are implausible!)

For Chocolate Box this year, I am particularly craving romance: first kisses, first exchange of “I love you,” moving in together, other relationship milestones, Valentine’s Days, anniversaries, proposals, weddings. Romance tropes and romcom moments are a big fave of mine!

SMUT LIKES:

• Most important: that everyone is having a helluva good time and fully consenting.
• Couples who are friends as well as lovers. Friendly banter, cuddling, just the general sense that both really like each other as well as wanting to tear each other’s clothes off.
• People who can't stay quiet during sex; dirty talk, moaning, little cut-off noises, reverent invocation of the lover’s name, distracted chattering, all of it!
• Women taking the lead in bed, anywhere on the spectrum between just In Charge to all the way femdom.
• Morning cuddles and/or sex.
• Silly/fun sex roleplaying, from simple to elaborate.
• One partner reading to the other one in bed, which eventually gets abandoned in favor of sex.
• Eager cunnilingus – a giver who is not only super into it for their partner’s sake, but super turned on by the experience of giving it.

Anything and everything! I know that’s probably not really helpful, but as someone who can only draw stick figures, I am in awe at all artists and enjoy everything you create. :)

I have no ratings restrictions. I particularly enjoy moments full of affection and joy. Kisses, cuddling, hugs, smut, moments of emotional intimacy with women staring into each other’s faces, women proposing or getting married, a woman cupping her lover’s face in her hands or stroking her lover’s cheeks – all of these would be lovely.

I love the Kim family! I have mixed feelings about the final seasons, as I feel like the show kind of stagnated a bit with character and plot development, especially with the Kim kids. So I would love to see a fic or art that let one or more family members blossom and find familial, romantic, and/or career happiness. (See my comments up top about my greatest love being characters who are happy or in the process of becoming happy. ♥)

What does that mean? You choose! Maybe Janet gets an OFC girlfriend and Jung is super supportive and helps her come out to Appa & Umma. Maybe Appa finds out that Jung & Kimchee are dating, has a long think, and then his surprising acceptance goes a long way towards helping Jung & Appa reconcile. Maybe Jung & Shannon go on the Amazing Trek after all (without getting engaged) and have a lot of fun and fall deeper in love the whole time.

For this fandom, my favorite characters are the Kim family and Kimchee. I am not a big fan of Gerald and Chelsea, and would prefer them to appear as little as possible. (I do quite like Semira though! If you ship Janet/Semira, that would work for me as well.)

Fandom 2: Lord Peter Wimsey
My Requested Ship: Harriet Vane/Woman Accused of Murder She Intends to Clear

Harriet is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction. Harriet Walter is “my” Harriet, but I love book!Harriet as well! What I'm particularly interested for in this exchange is art or fic about her finding happiness with a woman who’s in the same position Harriet was in Strong Poison.

Specific prompts:
• How does Harriet’s experience under trial help her support and/or vindicate the woman she’s falling in love with?
• Has the woman been framed for murder because she’s dating Harriet and someone wants to hurt Harriet?
• Five clues Harriet thinks might free the woman she loves, and the one that finally does.
• Harriet and her lover’s first kiss, after Harriet proves her innocent.
• Harriet doesn’t know the accused murderer, but she hears about the travesty of justice underway and jumps into the efforts to vindicate her. But along the way she finds herself falling in love…

Please no twist ending in which the accused murderer turns out to be an actual murderer.

Also, I nominated Harriet/F!Peter and it was approved, but it must have been deleted at the last possible second because I checked after the tagset closed and it was still in there (and it never popped up in any query posts). I think it was probably accidentally deleted because someone thought it was a duplicate for Harriet/Peter, which is also a lovely ship but not the one I was planning on requesting.

Shang-Chi was hands-down my favorite new canon of 2021, and it’s my favorite all-time movie at this point. I flat-out adore Katy, Xialing, and Shang-Chi, and their relationships with each other. Like, I could read 1000 fics about this movie and still want more!

I also really enjoyed Eternals - I think I would’ve enjoyed it even more as a miniseries, and my favorite characters weren’t the main characters, but that’s where fandom comes in! My favorite characters were Kingo, Karun, Makkari, Phastos, Gilgamesh, and Druig.

Any of the pairings I requested will make me very happy!

For ship pairings: I will always eat up tropes/scenarios like friends-to-lovers, first kisses, and first times. I could read about 5000 of them for the exact same ship and never grow tired of reading about how a couple fell in love and got together for the first time. But I also love other things for these ships, and am super into playfulness, affection, ships having canon-style adventures, established relationships, and off-the-wall crossovers (want to have the Thirteenth Doctor show up while Katy & Xialing are visiting Ta Lo for their one-year anniversary? Be my guest!)

Basically, for these ships what I am craving most is tonal – affection, humor, warmth, joy, playfulness, falling in love/being in love, happiness. Anything you can think of that fits in those tones would be fantastically fabulous! Feel free to play with format, tense, nonlinear narratives, epistolary fic, or any other non-standard creative choices your heart desires.

For gen pairings: For Katy & Shang-Chi, I would love affection, humor, warmth, joy, playfulness, and happiness. Whether that’s pre-canon or post-canon, if you can capture the movie dynamic between them and create more of the hilarious loving BFFs, I would be ecstatic.

For Katy & Xialing and Shang-Chi & Xialing, I would love to see a story in which they built a friendship (or repaired their relationship and built an adult friendship, in the case of the siblings). Canon-style adventures are always fun! I’m also totally cool with skipping that bit and leaping ahead to three years in the future where Xialing is BFFs with both of them and they go out for bowling (like the deleted scene from the movie!)

For mixed pairings: A combination of both! Same tonal likes of affection, humor, warmth, joy, playfulness, and happiness. :)

Fandom 4: West Side Story (both versions)
My Requested Pairings: Anita/Bernardo

(Because I’m requesting nine other fandoms, I only have space to officially request one version of West Side Story, but I’m perfectly fine with either version!)

While I have nothing against Maria & Tony, the couple that I personally felt sizzled with chemistry and sexual dynamism was Anita & Bernardo. There’s an attraction, intimacy, and companionship between them that just makes me grin! They tease each other, and play with each other, and flirt up a storm, but there’s a comfort-level between them that makes me 100% sure that after “America” is over, they’re falling into bed with fireworks going. I read them as a long-term couple, probably engaged with the wedding imminent, and I majorly ship them.

I would love a story that (temporarily or permanently) yeeted the tragedy of the movie in favor of focusing in on Anita & Bernardo. For this fandom I am 100% on board with a happy-ending canon-divergence AU (I know, I know, Shakespeare turning over in his grave), but I am also fine with a temporarily-happy story that doesn’t change canon.

Fandom DNW: Please don’t include the attempted rape, or references to it.

In addition to my general and smut likes/prompts, here are some canon-specific ones:

• Bernardo is only wounded in the fight. Anita helps Maria & Tony escape together for a new life, then marries Bernardo once he’s recovered. (Probably doesn’t tell him about helping his little sister run away, though.)
• How did Bernardo propose? Were he and Anita an arranged match like Chino & Maria? Or did they fall in love naturally?
• Anita and Bernardo fall into bed together after “America”.
• Bernardo talks a big talk and has a big swagger, but it’s Anita who’s really in charge. (Either in the bedroom, or out of it!)
• The fight doesn’t happen, and over time Bernardo becomes reconciled to Tony & Maria being together. I’m not sure how this would happen, haha – maybe Tony saves Bernardo’s life somehow? Or Anita’s? Or Bernardo and Anita’s child’s? Maybe Chino falls in love with someone else? Maybe becoming a husband, or becoming a father, changes Bernardo’s perspective? Maybe Maria’s sadness wears him down over time?
• Anita and Bernardo’s wedding.
• Anita and Bernardo reprise “America” when they’re old and gray. How have their lives gone? What’s changed about how they see America? Is it still the same? Are they still the same? Do their grandchildren see it the same way?
• Any of your own happy/funny plotbunnies about Anita and Bernardo!

Fandom 5: Doctor Who (2005)
My Requested Pairings: Eleven/River, Twelve/River, Thirteen/River

I am a diehard Doctor/River shipper, and I love all three of these iterations. Whichever you choose will make me very happy!! For all of them, what I am craving most is tonal – affection, humor, teasing (and sexual teasing), warmth, joy, playfulness, falling in love/being in love, happiness. Anything you can think of that fits in those tones would be fantastically fabulous! Feel free to play with format, tense, nonlinear narratives, epistolary fic, or any other non-standard creative choices your heart desires.

I am particularly craving romance this year – flirting, kisses, smut, small intimacies, direct and oblique statements about how much one person cares for each other, all the different love languages as River and the Doctor might express them, and all the romance tropes (there was only bed? Cuddling for warmth? Undercover as a couple?) I am also always on board with sweet canon-style adventures, with River and the Doctor flirting as they save the universe (and perhaps save each other from having to regenerate along the way).

And one thing in particular I will never get enough of is River being rescued from the library. Her story doesn’t have to end tragically! I’m not saying they should be monogamous life partners for all eternity, but River freed from the library to be a space traveler and archaeologist who sometimes crosses paths with her spouse for a while – that sounds ideal to me. <3

Fandom 6: National Champions (2021)
My Requested Pairings: Cecil Burgess/LeMarcus James, Cecil Burgess & LeMarcus James

This is probably the most obscure of my requests! National Champions is a movie that came out at the beginning of December, but was only out for a week before Spider-Man came in and stole all the screens. I was lucky enough to see it before it went out of the theater, and I really enjoyed it! (It’s now available on-demand online, although it’s still “early access” so it’s a bit pricy – I bet it’ll come down in price soon.)

What I am craving for this movie is Cecil & LeMarcus. What did Cecil think of LeMarcus’s actions? Did he think they were a stunt, or did he come to genuinely admire LeMarcus (even if he wasn’t willing to risk his own future to join LeMarcus’s cause)?

Maybe LeMarcus and Cecil’s meetup went differently (or they had a second meetup that Cecil asked for), and they ended up not only having a passionate discussion about LeMarcus’s cause, but that passion turned in other directions as well. Rivals becoming lovers (and its even rarer variant, rivals to lovers to partners) is always a bulletproof like of mine.

Or maybe Cecil did end up joining LeMarcus’s cause! Might they have even won a victory if they presented a united front? Probably not an unalloyed one, but could they have stopped the game if they’d worked together? Could they have won enough concessions that LeMarcus accepted a victory?

Or maybe it’s post-canon, and Cecil didn’t join LeMarcus, and now both are in the NFL, after an owner of a quarterback-desperate team came out and supported LeMarcus and drafted him. (LeMarcus being totally the Colin Kaepernick-like figure in this equation, just a Kaepernick who wasn’t blackballed.) LeMarcus keeps up his advocacy, and Cecil, who’s on another team, is drawn to him. Do they start a friendship, and does it perhaps grow into something more? Or maybe it’s a good number of years down the line, and retired Super Bowl-winning quarterback LeMarcus is being interviewed for a documentary about being an early hero of the movement that eventually led to a seismic change in college sports, and his husband Cecil is right there with him.

Fandom 7:One True Loves – Taylor Jenkins Reid
My Requested Pairings: Emma Blair/Sam Kemper

This was the first novel I’ve read in a while where fairly early on in the book I was practically vibrating with my sheer need to have my preferred ship end up together. If it had gone the other way I probably would’ve thrown the book across the room! I definitely ship Emma & Sam, and Sam in particular was so sweet and earnest and good. (Almost too perfect to be a real guy, but I will take it!)

The biggest thing I came away from the book wanting more of was Emma’s attraction to Sam. Sam represents the safe & settled choice, and he’s an absolute love, but I didn’t get as much heat out of their relationship as I did from Emma & Jesse. And I want that heat for them!

I would love tons and tons of romance (and sex, if you write smut!) for them! Flirting (I love flirting in established relationships!), kisses, smut, small intimacies, direct and oblique statements about how much one person cares for each other, all the different love languages as they might express them, banter and sexual banter, and riproaring smut with affection and desire and complete knowledge of each other’s bodies radiating off of both of them in waves. Their wedding day (and honeymoon night?) would be particularly wonderful.

I also have lots of specific likes and prompts at the top of my letter (including smut ones, if your inclination runs that way!), but I really do mean it when I say that as long as it fits my tonal preferences, I am totally up for any story or art about this ship! Surprise me!!

Final Note: I am perfectly fine with just book canon (and nominated it that way), but I do love the way the upcoming 2022 film was cast, with Emma played by a Chinese-American actress (Philippa Soo) and Sam played by a Chinese-Canadian actor (Simu Liu). If you choose, I would love to have that casting choice carried over to fic or art.

Fandom 8: Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
My Requested Pairings: Leia Organa/Poe Dameron

I will always adore this ship! I especially enjoy it when Poe is completely besotted with Leia, his all-time hero, and she is charmed by him in turn. How does Poe mount a campaign to woo her? What’s the first time Leia notices him and feels the pull of attraction? Do they flirt for a while, or fall into bed first and establish a friendship later? Do any of Poe’s friends (like BB-8, Finn, Rey, etc.) notice and tease him? Are they already in a long-term friends-with-benefits situation at the beginning of TFA? Or what about a universe where Leia doesn’t die, and Poe and Leia end up together after the trilogy!

Tonally, I’m craving affection, humor, teasing (and sexual teasing), warmth, joy, playfulness, falling in love/being in love, and happiness. Anything you can think of that fits in those tones would be fantastically fabulous! Feel free to play with format, tense, nonlinear narratives, epistolary fic, or any other non-standard creative choices your heart desires.

I would love to see your take on how John and Oscar might have fallen in love and got together. I’m craving affection, humor, teasing (and sexual teasing), warmth, joy, playfulness, falling in love/being in love, and happiness. Flirting, kisses, small intimacies, direct and oblique statements about how much one person cares for each other, different love languages, and all the romance tropes (there was only bed? Cuddling for warmth? Undercover as a couple?)

Maybe John and Oscar ship Finn and Poe so hard that it bleeds into their real lives! Maybe they are goofing around and improvise a scene continuation that ends in a kiss, either on camera or in their trailers rehearsing! (Does that end up on the outtakes reel?) Maybe it’s years after Star Wars, and they make another movie together and they both realize the sexual tension never went away. Maybe they’re both nominated for Oscars for different movies, and they turn up as each other’s dates, and announce that they’ve been together since TFA! Maybe they announce they eloped via Instagram post in costume (or Oscar posts proposal photos with a tongue-in-cheek caption about finally succeeding in capturing the heart of his Stormtrooper).

Also, one of my biggest bulletproof likes for Hollywood ships is coming-out fic, particularly “coming out as a couple” fic. I love media reactions, social media snippets, non-typical formats, “behind the scenes” style fic, tabloids that are getting everything very wrong, Hollywood/a film set as the world’s glitziest but also oddly typical workplace, etc etc.

Fandom DNWs: Please no significant others/families (everyone-is-single!AU is my preferred solution), and no explicit-level smut. (A low-M level is absolutely fine and in fact I'd love it – kissing, making out, necking, clothed grinding, lusting over and/or caressing abs, fade-to-black bed scenes, etc. It's just the outright explicit fic that's the line for me. And please no physical descriptions of dicks, it really squicks me in this context.)

My biggest bulletproof like in this particular set of ships is coming-out fic, particularly “coming out as a couple” fic but also the more traditional coming-out fic (if the actor or actress in question wasn’t out already). I love media reactions, social media snippets, non-typical formats, “behind the scenes” style fic, tabloids that are getting everything very wrong, Hollywood/a film set as the world’s glitziest but also oddly typical workplace, etc etc.

For films set in a ‘cinematic universe,’ the one I’m most familiar with is the MCU and I love superhero films, so the MCU (with fake films, films not yet cast, or existing films with different casting) or an expy version of the MCU would be a great choice! But I’d also be super into universes based on Star Wars, Star Trek, LOTR, or a totally made up cinematic universe. As long as there are individual movies with different leads, coming together to form a bigger whole, I’m good! I enjoy the dynamics involved there. :) I would particularly enjoy a big team-up movie (like an Endgame-style movie), where the actors or actresses are flirting on set like crazy. Do people realize they’re actually together? Think they’re joking? Post tongue-in-cheek cuddly set pictures on social media, but flip out in surprise when the actors or actresses actually end up being a couple?

For actors or actresses in love with their best friends, I love the juxtaposition between their crazy work life and the grounding, funny, steady, rock-solid friendship they has with their best friend. What happens to make them realize that they’re more than friends, though??! And/or how is that brave & scary confession finally made?

For the Oscars, kissing on stage at the Oscars and shocking the whole world – or proposing, or thanking them by name in an acceptance speech, or casually name-dropping them in an interview afterwards, or showing up on the red carpet as a couple – will always be catnip to me. I love the glitz and glam of the Oscars, and combine that with the “coming out as a couple” love and I will be putty in your hands!
